Screen Australia has announced almost $20 million investment in a diverse slate of feature films, adult television drama projects and children’s television series. The investment in 12 projects will trigger $100 million in production.

Features approved include The Rover, a futuristic Western from the producer and writer/director of Animal Kingdom, Liz Watts and David Michôd. Michôd will join Watts and David Linde (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as a producer. The film’s cast includes world-class acting talents Robert Pattinson and Guy Pearce.

SYDNEY -- On the day everyone learned that his girlfriend Kristen Stewart had strayed, Robert Pattinson's new starring role was given the greenlight.

Screen Australia said it will provide production financing for a previously announced Australian feature film project, The Rover, from Animal Kingdom writer-director David Michod. The Twilight star and Guy Pearce are both attached.

Set in the Australian desert, the futuristic western tells the story of Eric, who has left everything, everyone and every semblance of human kindness behind him, as he’s forced to join an injured gang member, Rey, to hunt down Rey’s gang after they steal the last of Eric’s possessions.

The Rover is produced by Porchlight Films in association with Los Angeles-based Lava Bear Films, with Liz Watts, David Linde and Michod producing. Film Nation will handle international sales, and Roadshow Films will be the Australian distributor.

The Rover is one of four features, four adult TV dramas and four kids TV series to receive $20 million of production funding from agency Screen Australia, triggering more than $100 million worth of production here.

 The actor, who has a mass worldwide fan base thanks to The Twilight Saga films, will play a thief in the Outback in Animal Kingdom director David Michod’s futuristic western The Rover.

Guy Pearce has also been confirmed for the shoot, which will start in South Australia in late January next year.

Michod and producer Liz Watts scouted locations across SA, including the Flinders Ranges, earlier this month.

Flinders Ranges Mayor Peter Slattery said it would be a treat if Pattinson were in the region during the seven-week on-location shoot. Another two weeks will be shot at the Adelaide Studios.

“I daresay it would induce a bit of excitement in the area,” he said. “The spin-off effect is that the attention on them cross-promotes the area that we’re in. We certainly would be most enthused about him coming.”

Pattinson will have the choice of SA’s best Outback hospitality, from Wilpena Pound, luxury homestead Arkaba Station and Rawnsley Park Luxury Eco Villas to iconic tourist destination the Prairie Hotel in Parachilna.

The South Australian Film Corp has invested $450,000 in the project, which was approved in the latest round of Screen Australia funding.

The Rover’s overall funding budget is $12,250,000.

Snow White and the Huntsman 2: Sequel may see a dark side and Fast-Tracking Snow White

blog.zap2it.com - Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth seem to have found themselves in another franchise! Considering the opening weekend box office success of "Snow White and the Huntsman," it's no surprise that Universal has given a green light to a sequel.

Scribe David Koepp is already writing No. 2, according to Deadline, and Rupert Sanders is meeting with Universal about returning to direct the next installment.

So what will the new film be about? Sanders tells MTV that now that Snow White has been made queen, the purity and innocence that made her valuable in the first film could be compromised. "I think the corruption of power would be the second one," he says. "I think we've created this very chaste girl who's got to this position and now she's in this position of supreme power."

He goes even further into just how corrupt she might go. "There's so many examples of people corrupted by power. When we were talking about it, myself and [producer] Joe Roth, there were so many things happening in the newspapers of these very powerful men abusing that power in hotelsand sports locker rooms. People who get powerful sometimes lose their bearings and abuse that power and that's kind of an intoxicating theme."

One person who isn't particularly psyched about a potentially corrupt Snow White? Stewart herself. "Well, I'm not saying anything. Nothing at all," she laughed. "Let's undermine our entire lead character in the very second [film].




thefilmstage - As is the case with any number of potential sequel starters, at around the one week in release mark a story is planted on a certain reputable site saying the studio is interested in moving forward with the franchise. This is meant trick the audience in thinking, “wait, a sequel? I have to see the first now!” It happened last summer with Green Lantern and while the latest is much more successful, it’s now occurring with Snow White and the Huntsman.

We heard murmurs of one earlier this spring and even news that David Koepp had been commissioned for script duties, now Deadline follows up that Universal is seriously serious about it. Seriously. They’re reportedly “making all the moves that indicate another chapter is in the offing, and on a fast track.” Talks are happening with first-time director Rupert Sanders to return, although he’s not obligated and he has other things on his mind, but they want him. As for the cast, including Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, they’ve both been optioned for a trilogy.

While we were mixed on the film, it’s certainly struck a cord with audiences, nearly crossing the $120 million mark worldwide in just a week, but it still has a ways to go to earn large profits off its reported $170 million budget. Sanders clearly has the visuals downpat, so if Koepp gives him a screenplay to work with, one that includes some actual, fully-realized characters, there’s little reason to be down on this prospect.

Universal Moves Forward With SWATH Sequel

Deadline.com - June 7, 2012 EXCLUSIVE: Studios are relying heavily on sequels this summer, but the toughest thing to do is to introduce something new that launches a franchise. It looks like Universal has done that with Snow White And The Huntsman. I’m told that the studio is making all the moves that indicate another chapter is in the offing, and on a fast track. Universal commenced David Koepp to write the sequel script, which Deadline revealed in late April might happen. The studio is now talking with director Rupert Sanders about a return, after he made his feature directing debut on the first installment. Sanders is interested; he had a great time making the first movie. But unlike most first time directors, he doesn’t have to come back. That’s because Snow White And The Huntsman was sold in an auction by CAA that included a presentation by Sanders of how he was going to shoot the film. Sanders was part of the package, as was producer Joe Roth, and that gave the agency leverage to make a much better deal than a first timer usually gets.

The filmmaker is in demand now, but he hasn’t chosen his next film and a sequel might well be it. I understand that the actors in the film have options for two sequels, so that part of the equation shouldn’t be too difficult. While there were plenty of potshots taken by journalists at Universal and its executives in expectation that Snow White and the Huntsman would suffer the same under-performing fate as Battleship, the film way outperformed its advance tracking for a $56 million opening weekend. It has continued to play during the week and has done $118 million worldwide . It still needs to perform in the next few grueling weeks, considering the film’s costs pegged at a reported $170 million, but there is an opportunity here to make a better film with the sequel. The first film got rushed when Relativity Media hired Julia Roberts and pressed ahead with Mirror Mirror. Relativity burned its bridges with Universal to rush out a film that wasn’t worth it, and Universal also hurried its film. Paying Koepp his fat fee (his franchise scripts include Spider-Man, Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible) indicates the studio will try to make the most of that opportunity, particularly with no reason to rush this time.

Collider - June 7th While Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman continues to battle for more box office earnings, Universal is already moving forward with the sequel. With the “origin” story in the Snow White franchise thus set up, it only goes to follow that the next chapter will be fast-tracked. Universal has set David Koepp (Spider-Man) to write the script. Hopefully, the sequel will have a more cohesive storyline, better dialogue and provide a payoff to its promises, something we discussed at length on last week’s podcast. Sanders may or may not be back, but stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth are optioned for two more films.

Deadline reports that Universal is anxious to move forward with the Snow White and the Huntsman follow up. The current iteration was a film we were all looking forward to seeing, but ended up being disappointed to varying degrees. Partly to blame was Relativity Media’s push of their own take on Snow White, Mirror Mirror. Then, having a debut director who cut his teeth in commercials didn’t help, although I was impressed by the array of visual displays at work in the film. What killed this picture were the three disparate storylines: an epic rebellion, a fantasy romance and a coming of age tale; none of the three came together in a unifying way that paid off in the end. That’s unfortunate because I think we all agreed that there was a decent story in there somewhere; it could have been afforded more time to develop. There is an opportunity to do that with a sequel…but is a sequel necessary? In my opinion, no; there’s not much story left to tell and not much reason to find one. And for all of Koepp’s hits (Mission: Impossible, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man), his more recent misses (War of the Worlds, Zathura: A Space Adventure, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) give me reason to pass. Deadline Cannes, May 21, 2012 – FilmNation Entertainment has acquired the majority of worldwide rights to The Rover from Animal Kingdom writer-director David Michôd (Hesher). Michôd has written the script based on a story he conceived with Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby). 

 This deal marks FilmNation’s migration into the acquisition space after ramping up their film investments and development slate. In addition to a full-fledged international sales arm, the banner now effectively develops, finances, and produces projects in-house as well as acquiring filmmaker driven content. The Rover is set in the Australian desert in a dangerous and dysfunctional near future. Eric has left everything and every semblance of human kindness behind him. Nick Cassavetes To Direct Kristen In Cali

Variety EXCLUSIVE: Nick Cassavetes (THE NOTEBOOK) will direct the gritty action pic CALI, for which Kristen Stewart is set to star. Pic follows a pair of San Fernando Valley lovebirds who sell a fake snuff film and ride off with a bundle of cash. Years later, the girl (Stewart) must “return from the dead” to save the younger sister she left behind. Voltage Pictures will be selling the film at the Cannes Film Market, and producers are anticipating a late summer start.

Cassavetes is best known for directing the hit Nicholas Sparks adaptation THE NOTEBOOK, as well as the true crime tale ALPHA DOG. Cassavetes is an actor as well, and he most recently appeared in THE HANGOVER PART II. -Jeff Sneider via Variety_JLD

'The Rover' News - Robert Pattinson and Productions

Producer Liz Watts is calling David Michod’s new film The Rover “a dirty and dangerous near-future western set in the Australian desert”.


She confirmed what the Internet is buzzing about: that Guy Pearce and Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson are in discussions to play, respectively, a man in pursuit of the people who stole his car and the brother of one of the thieves in Michod's follow-up to Animal Kingdom.

Reluctantly, Watts also added a few more details: it is hoped that The Rover will go into production late in the year and discussions about the project started 18 months ago between Michod and US producer David Linde.

Last year Linde opened the production and financing outfit Lava Bear Films with backing from Reliance Entertainment. At the time the company announced it had a first-look deal with Universal Pictures for the US and other significant international territories. Linde was, at one time, co-chair of Universal.

Linde is producing with Watts of Porchlight Films and Lava Bear president Tory Metzger will also be prominent in the credits.

Watts said that Libby Sharpe will act as line producer and the intention was to claim the producer offset.

Michod wrote the script based on an idea dreamt up by he and Joel Edgerton, one of Michod’s six partners in the Sydney-based film collective Blue-Tongue Films.

According to Deadline, Robert is set to star in "The Rover," which will follow a man who chases a gang who stole his car in the Australian outback. "Snow White and the Huntsman" star Kristen Stewart is set to topline "Cali," a gritty action pic set in Los Angeles that will be produced by Voltage Productions and New School Media.

Michael Diliberti ("30 Minutes or Less") wrote the script, which follows Mya (Stewart) and Chris, a pair of San Fernando Valley lovebirds with a penchant for bad choices and dangerous behavior. After selling a fake snuff film featuring Mya, they ride off into the sunset with a bundle of cash. Years later, Mya must "return from the dead" to save the younger sister she left behind in Cali, where the young couple contends with angry former business partners, homicidal porn stars, stoner vet techs, an unstoppable killing machine in a cowboy hat and their own contentious relationship.

 Craig J. Flores ("300") and Zev Foreman ("Killer Joe") will produce for Voltage, while Diliberti will also produce. His manager, Brian Levy of New School Media, will exec produce with Voltage topper Nicolas Chartier ("The Hurt Locker") and Stewart, who will pick up her first producing credit on the project.

Diliberti developed the script on spec before it was acquired by Voltage, which attached Stewart. Producers are currently out to directors and they're anticipating a late summer start date.

"Kristen is a talented and dynamic actor, with a proven box office draw," said Flores. "Her role in 'Cali' will be edgy and sexy. It will no doubt push the envelope on the public's view of Kristen's wide-ranging abilities. Voltage is thrilled to have her as a partner on this fantastic film."

 "Cali" marks a return to indie fare for Stewart, who has balanced the "Twilight" franchise pics like "Welcome to the Rileys," "The Runaways" and Walter Salles' upcoming adaptation of "On the Road." Thesp next stars in Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman" and the final installment in "The Twilight Saga," which Summit will release on Nov. 16.

Diliberti is coming off the seven-figure spec sale to GK Films of comedy "Little White Corvette," which has Emma Stone attached to star. Scribe is also writing a Fox 2000 project for "Crazy, Stupid, Love" helmers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra that Simon Kinberg is producing, a Sony pic for Seth Gordon that Matt Tolmach is producing and a Warner Bros. movie for Todd Phillips with his Green Hat Films banner producing.

Voltage, which produced Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar winner "The Hurt Locker," is currently in pre-production on Shia LaBeouf-starrer "The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman" and post-production on Robert Redford's political action-thriller "The Company You Keep," which also stars LaBeouf. Stewart is repped by Gersh and McKuin, Frankel and Whitehead, while WME and New School Media reps Diliberti.

 The Wrap Michael Diliberti, who penned "30 Minutes or Less," wrote the script with Stewart in mind for the role of Mya.

Kristen Stewart is ready for her next big starring role, and no we're not talking about the upcoming Breaking Dawn Part 2. Yes, we are super stoked for the final Twilight film to hit the public on November 16, but right now we're talking about Cali. We hear that's the title of the new movie -- it's being slated as a bold action flick. According to Variety, Kristen and an on-screen boyfriend disappear after getting mixed up with and conning the wrong people. They have to head back to California -- or Cali -- in order to save her younger sister who they left behind. This is definitely more of an adult-themed movie and will probably have a R rating based on the early descriptions, but very exciting news, we hear that KS will actually be on the producing docket and it will be her first producing credit to date. Ross M. Dinerstein, Managing Partner of Preferred Content, is producing alongside Jendresen and Kevin Waller.

Embankment Films, the international sales and distribution company recently launched by international sales veterans Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar will begin selling the film at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

”Mission: Blacklist” is a psychological thriller that details the true, inside story of the search for
 Saddam Hussein and the interrogator, Eric Maddox, who spearheaded his capture.

Rob Pattinson is attached to star in Mission: Blacklist, a psychological thriller that aims to tell the true story of the man who spearheaded the capture of Saddam Hussein.

Preferred Content’s Ross M. Dinerstein is producing alongside Erik Jendresen and Kevin Waller.

Jendresen, who was a writer-supervising producer on HBO’s Band of Brothers, wrote the script adapting the book titled Mission: Black List #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein---As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture.

The book was written by Eric Maddox, the Army interrogator who played a key role in pinpointing Hussein's hideout. Davin Seay co-wrote the book.

Embankment Films, the international sales and distribution company recently launched by sales veterans Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar, will sell the film at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

Jean-Stephane Sauvaire is attached to direct.
